Resolve snapping?

Xmas crackerThe first week of 2007 is over, and New Year’s resolutions nationwide are, no doubt, already crumbling. Considering this, it occured to me that there’s an essential flaw in the whole process of making such a resolution. If someone was genuinely determined to do something, why ever would they wait until the New Year? Why not just do it? They can’t have had their heart in it if they waited till the 31st - to make a funky “resolution” - before getting on with it. They had all year to get moving, it doesn’t seem like there’s much conviction behind the decision. It seems all New Year’s resolutions must be half-hearted from the start, and one can only conclude that they’re merely part of the fun - there’s no need to lose hair over breaking them. They’re like Christmas Crackers - you do them because it’s that time of year, and it’s not like you’re trying to avoid them snapping. But if you really do want to achieve something in 2007, forget makeshift vows. Just do it!
