Voices of the future

The Government has embarked on a £10 million project to get more children singing in the classroom. Singing is a costless and enjoyable addition to the curriculum and yet in recent years it has been neglected: too many teachers have started seeing singing as a “luxury” and too many young boys now think it is “uncool” to sing. Like many other people, I welcome the new initiative. For me, singing was one of the best parts of my childhood - it was so much fun and kept my spirits high throughout the day. Not only that but singing is also meant to be good for you. All sorts of songbooks are now being designed for schools with not only classic songs but contemporary pop and jazz, guaranteed to be enjoyable for children everywhere. Whoever said school had to be dull?
