What if dinosaurs were still around?

800px-edmontonia_dinosaur.pngMost scientists now believe that the extinction of the dinosaurs was due to a giant asteroid hitting the Earth. But what would have happened had the asteroid missed (which was quite likely given the odds)? We may think that the dinosaurs wouldn’t have been able to survive an Ice Age due to being cold-blooded, but new discoveries of dinosaur fossils in polar regions show that they were actually tougher than that and would probably have adapted well enough to temperature extremes.

A new BBC2 programme called “My Pet Dinosaur” examines how life would have been if dinosaurs had survived. Apparently the dinosaurs would have continued to dominate the lands and no modern animals such elephants, giraffes and lions would have evolved. There’d be no milk, no leather, no wool and no domestic companionship, though there may be equivalents – for example a Heterodontosaurus may make a perfect pet for the children! It is just fascinating to think of what would have happened if only something had been slightly different. I don’t know whether to feel glad or not!
