BNP gains

bnpWith all the ballot papers counted and the local election results in, it’s slightly disconcerting to see that the BNP have once again made some gains. I’ll admit there was quite a long list of parties on the ballot paper, but surely no-one would panic to the extent of just putting a cross in the first box on the list? I’ve often wondered if the BNP do well just because they are alphabetically top of the list…. Or maybe we really are turning into a nation of xenophobic little islanders. A comment on the BBC “Have your say” pages reads as follows:

Voted for the first time this year… well, I say vote but actually mean ruined my ballot. I wanted to vote BNP but saw there was nobody standing for BNP in my area so instead I drew the flag of Saint George and in big letters wrote ‘BNP FOR ENGLAND’. I know it won’t count but it shows where my loyalty is.

Anyone else perturbed by this?
