Sarkozy wins French presidency

It seems it’s the season for elections. And tonight Nicolas Sarkozy was declared the winner in the French presidential race. Watching the pictures on tonight’s news, there was a real sense of both euphoria and dismay. The Sarkozy faithful seemed ecstatic and Segolene Royal’s supporters almost numb with disappointment. It’s great to see people so involved in politics, so bovvered, quite frankly. One thing concerns me, though – the parallels with the New Labour victory of 1997. There was euphoria then, and the belief that it was a new dawn for the UK. According to Nicolas Domenach, one of Sarkozy’s biographers, the new President admires Tony Blair “hugely”, and says
“Tony Blair was able to seduce the media, in the way Sarkozy does. And Sarkozy looks at how Tony Blair was able to sell his political ideology.”
Well, I really hope the new French leader will be less concerned with spin and more interested in real, tangible change that will make life better for all French people. Will he leave a better legacy in ten years’ time than our own out-going PM?

Crap.

Seriously mind you, though the opposition was crap, this is slightly concerning. France does need to reform economically sure, but does this have to include his policies on, for example, immigration as well. From my reading, Royale, seems to have advocated fairly similar economic reforms, yet without this spin. I’ll post something a bit more clear on this later.
